MS DIGEST – Feb. 20, 2015 – If you are feeling tired and worn out in the middle of the day, you are not alone. Fatigue is one of the most common complaints among MS patients. And just as many have problems with sleep, ranging from sleep apnea to restless leg syndrome, and insomnia.
In a January 2015 study published in Sleep, researchers led by Tiffany Braley, MD, MS, Assistant Professor of Neurology at the University of Michigan Multiple Sclerosis and Sleep Disorders Centers
found that some of the over-the-counter (OTC) sleep medications people use may be contributing to their problems with daytime fatigue.
“Fatigue is a leading cause of diminished quality of life among individuals with MS, and is often considered to be the single most debilitating symptom of the disease,” Dr. Braley says. “Fatigue also imposes significant socioeconomic consequences, including loss of work hours and loss of employment.”
Her study examined the use of hypnotics, or sleep-causing medications, among 200 MS patients and found that those with more sleep problems were also more likely to use over-the-counter sleep medications, especially those containing diphenhydramine, such as Benadryl®, Compoz Nighttime Sleep Aid® and Unisom®, which was also associated with daytime fatigue.
While her study wasn’t designed to show that these drugs cause fatigue, Dr. Braley does say it points to a factor doctors and patients may overlook when addressing fatigue.
“Our findings are the first to shed light on specific hypnotic use patterns in MS, and the results suggest a potential risk from OTC hypnotic use, which may constitute a previously overlooked yet important contributor to fatigue.”
